The Sun in February
That moment on a frigid day
when February’s sun stretches–
touching the drifting snows
and the running river waters
with an embrace of a long-lost friend.
Cerebral Smells
Hot pink rose–
I took your image on a sunny September afternoon.
Now, I smell you in my mind against the deep, cold winter.
Things I’ve noticed recently
earlier sunrise
bunny tracks in the snow
a robin in the maple tree
the sweet taste of mandarins
gulls on the river
Lace Curtains
Watching through the curtains, she judges the day.
The moody winter sun filters through the fabric and
becomes small, peppered sparks in her weary eyes.
February Sunset
Sunset in early February reflects
a warm glow upon sheets of river ice.
Nostalgic for spring, I keep the balcony door
open until the sun disappears completely.
Thinking about the Geese
You were here before the houses were built.
Before the boats roared along the water,
before fishermen cast their lines out,
you swam along this river and called it home.
I envy your organization, your dedication,
your beauty and collected calm.
And I am sorry that we take so much from you,
so much for granted.
Winter on the River
This monochromatic scene stares at me
for weeks on end in the deep winter.
And although I find it beautiful and serene,
what I wouldn’t do to see a ruby red poppy
jutting out defiantly from the snows.
River Ice
Your soft, flowing, frigid blankets
float softly on the river.
Frightened at how dangerously hypnotic
the spell can be, I step silently
away from the river’s edge.
