in the light of the cold January sky.

Rest here with me.
Sit down on the marble steps, tell me what you’re thinking.
After we sketch the sculptures, after we write poetry
in notebooks, right before we leave for dinner–
Rest here with me.
Sit down on the marble steps, tell me one more time,
what you’re thinking.

not for skiing
or for shoveling,
not for driving
or for boarding,
but for dreaming
and for steaming

for crunching
beneath boots
and napping deeply
on sycamore roots–
for kissing long lashes
and drifting softly
as crystal ashes
