those little purple faces smile serenely on the balcony–
while the geese fly and wasps dart and the frogs call out at dusk

cars from the 1930’s and 40’s
bottles filled with buttons
objects found in abandoned buildings
jelly jars as glasses
lockets with locks of hair
stamps on yellowed envelopes
chipped pitchers holding fragrant lilacs
photos in cigar boxes
rolodex rotary files
steamer trunks with hand lettering
thick, tall maples
bibles with scribbled family trees
barns on the pennsylvania countryside

fading spring

Storms never last do they baby
Bad times all pass with the winds
Your hand in mine stills the thunder
You make the sun want to shine
From the song, Storms Never Last by Jessi Colter, 1980

the cherry blossoms loom above us in a pink cloud–
they rain on the grass and the roads, and we walk upon the blushing petals, bruising them with our weight,
as the pup wears one on her wet nose

it’s always spring when you visit,
tucked just beneath that tender petal

after waiting for months,
it seemed like spring came upon us overnight

i was tempted to bring you home,
but you would not survive–
so i captured your image instead and sadly, waved goodbye

did you forget me after all?

in the night, while the snow fell silently,
i dreamt of flying rose petals,
pink and velvety,
aromatic and delicate–
catching them upon my tongue,
they melted softly like
cotton candy communion
