On the Museum Steps

Rest here with me.
Sit down on the marble steps, tell me what you’re thinking.
After we sketch the sculptures, after we write poetry
in notebooks, right before we leave for dinner–
Rest here with me.
Sit down on the marble steps, tell me one more time,
what you’re thinking.

A love of snow

not for skiing
or for shoveling,
not for driving
or for boarding,
but for dreaming
and for steaming
river waters–
for crunching
beneath boots
and napping deeply
on sycamore roots–
for kissing long lashes
and drifting softly
as crystal ashes

December Marsh

The marsh in late fall exudes a musky scent
that rides the cold breeze and clings to my coat.
Amber brambles crunch beneath my boots while
the sunset sifts through leaves and branches.
Breathing deeply, I let the soft rays warm my soul.

What is it about you…

that draws my attention every morning?
Your solid foundation, not a brick out of place,
your dental work, pristine and perfectly aligned,
your keystones distributing the weighty stress of the world
or your intricately carved cycloptic window?
I am captivated by the structure of your character and look away
in time to miss the green light turn to red once again.

November Rose

Two days before the storm arrived,
I admired your shy, blushing beauty.
Surely you must have known it was
dangerous, foolhardy, reckless even.
How could I later resist looking
for your velvety petals in the snow?

Morning Walk

Walking at the blue hour of morning,
wet and cold and almost foreboding–
I hear the train in the distance…

It races past with a steamy, pulsating pace
that blows my red scarf onto my face–
I pause to pick up the terrified pup.
