with all the dazzling hopes and gauzy dreams

unfurl–
lift yourself to the sun’s stunning rays
with all the dazzling hopes and gauzy dreams
set before you on these beautiful, ordinary days

Smooth Ella Fitzgerald,
and classic Doobie Brothers,
clay beads and wooden beads
and bright brass beads,
old postcards, antique shops and small flower shops,
tuna steaks and asparagus with cheese
and churros with sugar and sweet, strong coffee,
marigolds and long yellow petals and tiny baby’s breath
and small pine cones that trail blue feathers

we take the steps one by one,
stone by stone,
inch by inch,
struggling to reach the top
or clumsily landing at the bottom–
but it is the climbing,
the effort,
the pregnant promise of the actual moment
that will light the way

your thorns only add to your beauty

imagine her stepping silently in robes of violet velvet,
amid stone hallways and green gardens,
her heart pulsing through the ages,
in me and perhaps in you–
alive and well

and then what happened?
i’m not sure, that’s all i remember…
(taking a small break, will see everyone next week, be safe and well)

you are long dead,
but my sorrow lives

i search for safe docking,
while the ropes are still strong enough to hold us

there are times,
when one small part of a story
is all that really needs to be told

i tied happiness to my soul
and let it lift me
gently above the storm
