I donโt see the weekend tourists,
the sticky fingered children,
the sun soaked fishermen casting off the docks.
Instead, I think about Magellan and wonder
what inspired him to keep navigating
in that giant, infinite circle.
Lovely! The answer to the question asked in the poem is simple. Greed and desire for a new route to the Spice Islands by Charles I the King of Spain. Great summary on Wili under “Circumnavigation” at this link: Takes maybe 5 minutes to read.
That is probably quite true, I do believe that the desire for money and prestige must have been a motivator. Still, consider the immenseness of that journey. I just wonder if there were other passions being fulfilled or searching to be fulfilled. I will go to your link that you recommended…
I believe that a more powerful motivation was at work, the obsession to know what’s beyond the line of the horizon, the irresistible urge to discover something even at risk of death. Thanks S.! ๐

There has to be some truth to that. Even for all the money and all the power, there has to be something else to drive such an expedition.

I suspect the same thing that drove me to ride my bicycle 10,000 miles around North America: the desire to see new territory.:) โCurt
